Joseph Kosinski just added another actor to his “Miami Vice ’85” cast sheet, and it’s someone who was part of the ensemble of his most successful movie, “Top Gun: Maverick.”
Deadline reports that Danny Ramirez is now part of Kosinski’s adaptation of the ’80s crime TV series in a supporting, albeit unknown, role. He joins stars Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, as well as fellow supporting cast members Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, and Camila Morrone. That’s quite a formidable ensemble already, but expect a few more notable names to sign on in the coming weeks.
As its title suggests, “Miami Vice ’85” is set in mid-’80s Miami and follows Jordan’s Rico Tubbs and Butler’s Sonny Crockett as the undercover detectives wade through the city’s glamour, corruption, and violent underbelly. Dan Gilroy pens the script for Kosinski’s film; Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier edition of the screenplay. Kosinski also produces the pic alongside Dylan Clark. Also on board, “Miami Vice” creator Michael Mann in an exec producer capacity. Sara Scott and Christina Hoffrogge oversee the film for Universal Pictures.
Ramirez recently wrapped work on Todd Haynes‘ next film, “De Noche,” as well as “Baton,” a project he both wrote and directed. Also forthcoming for the actor: “Samo Lives,” a new biopic about NYC artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Ramirez is onscreen next in the MCU blockbuster “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Universal currently has “Miami Vice ’85” dated for a May 19, 2028 theatrical release, and with Kosinski filming it in IMAX, expect the studio to pull out all the stops to make the film a summer movie season smash hit. Stay tuned for more casting news as shooting on the pic starts later this year.
