We couldn’t be more excited to see director Joseph Kosinski (“F1,” “Top Gun: Maverick”) and screenwriter Dan Gilroy (“Andor,” “Nightcrawler”) teaming up to tackle the world that was produced and creatively spearheaed by action guru Michael Mann, as “Miami Vice ’85” is an 1980s-set reboot of the mega-popular undercover cop series that was updated into Mann’s modern feature film in 2006. The new incarnation at Universal Pictures has already landed the one-two-punch of in-demand actors Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, with another name joining the call sheet.
A casting update from Deadline has revealed that “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Weapons” actor Alden Ehrenreich has taken a part in the movie. Another awesome element here is that Kosinski will be shooting, set to begin production this year, using IMAX cameras, something recently done on Christopher Nolan‘s “The Odyssey,” also released by Universal last month.
There is a big expectation that the speed boats (aka, cigarette boats) are going to be a big part of the new film, which had been a huge part of the Miami drug underworld’s smuggling operations to bring cocaine, heroin, and other major drugs into the port city. The smaller and extremely fast boats were hard for the Coast Guard and other authorities to catch. Although we’re still waiting on a more concrete plot beyond the two protagonists traversing the criminal world to bust up a syndicate.
Jordan has been extremely busy after winning his Best Actor Oscar for his dual roles in Ryan Coogler‘s vampire thriller “Sinners” and has already directed a new remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair” for Amazon MGM Studios, heading to theaters on March 5, 2027. He’s also attached to direct “Creed III‘ and is set to return to the John Clark role (introduced in “Without Remorse“) for “Rainbow Six,” which once had Chad Stahelski (“Highlander,” “John Wick” franchise) enlisted to direct.
More names are expected to be announced in the coming weeks for the growing cast of “Miami Vice ’85,” and Universal has already set the film’s theatrical date for a prime spot on the studio’s early summer slate for May 19, 2028.
