Got a Tip?

Michael Cera Learning Spanish For Collaboration With ‘The Maid’ Director Sebastian Silva

EXCLUSIVE: Even though many stars and non-stars just adopt the same onscreen persona repeatedly, it seems like Michael Cera has become a whipping boy by those who just need to complain about actors who do good work. Blast on Cera’s somewhat limited repertoire of characters all you want, but you can’t argue with a body of work that includes “Superbad,” “Youth in Revolt” and the supremely underestimated “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” If he wants to play the same character over and over again (which he doesn’t), then we don’t mind if it results in work like that.

However, it does seem that the unconventional leading man might be looking to re-invent himself. We recently spoke to his “Youth on Revolt” director Miguel Arteta who revealed that we’re about to experience a new frontier… Cera En Espanol! It turns out that Cera will be working with “The Maid” director Sebastian Silva on a new project. “He’s gonna do a movie with him in Chile,” Arteta said. “He’s spending five hours a day learning Spanish. He follows his own heart.”

Cera wouldn’t be the first comedic talent going Spanish. Will Ferrell has already committed to the telenovela spoof formerly titled “Casa De Mi Padre” alongside Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal. Could this be a new trend of bilingual comedians? We could think of better ways to introduce foreign cinema to America than involving Ferrell and Cera, but Sebastian Silva is an exciting new director, and we’re eager to see Cera work with someone of his caliber.
