Mike Myers Reprises Dr. Evil For Verizon Ad Helmed By Jay Roach, Says ‘Austin Powers 4’ Is Happening

Canadian comedian Mike Myers has been promising that “Austin Powers 4” is on the table for over a decade, and in a recent video on Trevor Noah‘s podcast channel on YouTube, as they took in a World Cup game (with Myers’ son Spike on hand), he reiterated that they’re still pursuing that fourth installment, but stopped short of sharing any new information about when/where it would happen.

When directly asked by Noah if audiences would be getting “Austin Powers 4,” Myers responded without any hesitation with a blunt, “Yes.”

That’s not it; a new Verizon advertisement dropped yesterday with Mike Myers, Rob Lowe, Seth Green, and Mindy Sterling reprising their “Austin Powers” franchise roles, with Myers back as Dr. Evil. And it even had Jay Roach directing (behind the “Austin Powers” trilogy) the spot as well, which may or may not telegraph that “Austin Powers 4” could be closer than we realize by possibly signaling Roach’s involvement.

We haven’t seen the James Bond parody films on the big screen since 2002’s “Austin Powers in Goldmember.” The third installment, which established that Austin and Dr. Evil were estranged brothers (their father played by Michael Caine), was considered a lacklustre effort compared to the previous two movies, and seemingly placed the comedy franchise in cryostasis for over 20 years. Despite years of talk of a fourth mission, nothing really had materialized concretely.

You might remember that actor Daniel Craig once said that the reason why his tenure as James Bond ended up so serious in juxtaposition compared to other eras of 007 was to help contrast the franchise from “Austin Powers,” after those films “f***ked” them. Given that the Bond franchise is back in the headlines thanks to the new video game “007 First Light” being a massive success and Denis Villeneuve‘s “Bond 26” set to introduce a new actor as the MI6 Agent, maybe it’s the right time to unfreeze Austin Powers?
