Miles Teller Explains How ‘Fantastic Four’ Was “Unjustly Critiqued,” Talks Han Solo Audition For ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff

Fantastic Four"Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice" opens this week, and no matter how good or bad or in between it turns out to be, it will likely clear the low comic book movie bar set by last year’s "Fantastic Four." 20th Century Fox‘s failed franchise reboot was a total misfire, with the movie unable to overcome a troubled production. But when asked about it recently on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Miles Teller defended the picture and the people who made it.

"People think that when you make something like a ‘Fantastic Four’ that doesn’t do well, people think ‘Oh you phoned it in’ and it couldn’t be more untrue. You work harder on the bad films, or the films that turn out maybe not the way you intended, because something’s not working. And I thought it was kind of unjustly critiqued that way; there are even bigger bombs if you’re looking at how much money went into the production and what they reaped back," he said. "But I think it’s unfortunate a movie like that becomes a scarlet letter on a resume when so many talented people worked really hard and maybe a handful of people took it in a negative direction. But so many people worked really hard on that that are so talented."

That being said, the actor does acknowledge there were problems, and said that for any actor, the ideal situation is "if you’re in a position where you can say, ‘Hold off I’m not signing off on this dotted line until this script is exactly where you want it’ " rather than pushing ahead with something that might not be ready. And indeed, one of the key issues with Josh Trank‘s film were the reports that his vision and what the studio wanted were constantly at odds.

Meanwhile, Teller’s name was also in the mix to play a young Han Solo in Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s upcoming "Star Wars" spinoff movie. And while he apparently hasn’t made the final list of contenders, the actor shares that the chance to get the job finally forced him to watch George Lucas’ original trilogy.

"I had never even seen any of the original ‘Star Wars’ movies until maybe a month or a couple weeks before my first audition because I was like, ‘I should check this out’ (laughs). It holds up," he said. "I just love Harrison Ford, I think that’s a great character. I love his brand, I mean so many guys would’ve played that part so wrong and he has humor at the right times. Harrison Ford is a very big actor, when you see the facial expressions and the things he does he goes big, but he’s just always the coolest guy in the room and he’s got all of those great qualities."

And in that answer, Teller has also explained why finding a new actor to play Han Solo is going to be a tall order.

The actor’s next film, "Get A Job," opens on Friday. Listen to Teller’s full podcast chat below. [via Heroic Hollywood]
