Few directors enjoy documenting bureaucratic process quite like David Fincher, especially when it comes to tracking down serial killers. His 2007 film “Zodiac” explored the life-wrecking obsessive tendencies of those tracking down the Zodiac Killer in San Francisco. Despite a handful of unforgettably harrowing scenes, “Zodiac” is a dense procedural. In 2017, the director of “Zodiac” and “Seven” resumed his dive into the mind of serial killers with the first season of the surprising Netflix show “Mindhunter.” Now, Fincher is back with a trailer for season 2 of “Mindhunter.”

The first season, written by showrunner Joe Penhall, followed Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) as they interview imprisoned serial killers with the hope of applying their new knowledge to open investigations. The new season picks up a few years later, with the same two FBI agents now looking into the infamous Atlanta child murders that took place from 1979-1981. This season notably adds Damon Herriman as the incarcerated Charles Manson. Herriman also portrayed Manson in Quentin Tarantino’s recent film “Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood.”
Based on the plot description and casting decisions, this season of “Mindhunter” looks to delve back into the depths of human depravity through Ford and Tench’s conversations with various imprisoned serial killers.

Fincher, who directs the first episode of Season 2, shared some of the inspiration for this season, “In the ‘70s, post-Manson, post-Son of Sam, post-Zodiac, there really was, I don’t think you can say it was an epidemic, but there was definitely the feeling that the notion of this has gotten away from us,” alluding to the celebrity serial killers that caught on during this time. Where the first installment of “Mindhunter” dealt with the inner workings of these killers, this new crop of episodes takes place while the whole nation obsesses over these killers.
