'Miss Juneteenth' Trailer: A Mother Wants A Better Future For Her Daughter In This Sundance Standout

It’s not a shocking revelation to find out that a parent wants their child to have more than they ever did. No matter if you’re someone struggling to pay your bills, living paycheck to paycheck, or if you have incredible wealth, a parent’s goal is to make sure their child doesn’t face hardship that could be prevented. And that love between a parent and child is the focus of the new drama, “Miss Juneteenth.”

As seen in the trailer for the film, “Miss Juneteenth” follows the story of a former beauty pageant winner that is barely getting by years after winning the prestigious event. But with a teenage daughter on the verge of graduating high school, the mother will do anything to make sure her kid wins the same pageant that she had success in years prior so that the teenager can get the scholarship award and have a better life, where she might not have to scrub toilets to pay the bills.

The film stars Nicole Beharie, Kendrick Sampson, and Alexis Chikaeze. “Miss Juneteenth” is written and directed by Channing Godfrey Peoples. The new film marks her directorial feature debut. Previously, the filmmaker wrote for the drama series “Queen Sugar.”

“Miss Juneteenth” had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The film also made it on our list of 52 Films Directed By Women To Watch In 2020.

“Miss Juneteenth” arrives in select theaters and VOD on June 19, naturally.
