Janelle Monáe is poised to have a big 2020. She’s the star of Season 2 of Amazon’s acclaimed mystery series, “Homecoming,” which is expected to hit the Prime Video streaming service this month, and she’s also the star of the upcoming thriller, “Antebellum,” which could be a breakout hit film in a year that has been without features on the big screen for months.
As seen in the new trailer for “Antebellum,” the actress stars as a woman that is seemingly plucked out of her idyllic life in the modern day and somehow transported back to the era of slavery, where she must fight oppression and save her own life, in the process.
The film stars Monáe, Marque Richardson II, Eric Lange, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, Tongayi Chirisa, Gabourey Sidibe, Rob Aramayo, Lily Cowles, and Jena Malone. Directors Gerard Bush and Christoper Renz helm the new thriller.
With the release of the new trailer, Lionsgate is also announcing the new release date for the film on August 21. This is an update after the film was originally expected to arrive in theaters back in April. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, Lionsgate pulled the film, along with several others, out of its original date. Now, it appears that the studio is confident the thriller will now be able to land on the big screen in the late summer, just days after WB releases “Wonder Woman 1984.”
Of course, there are still rumors that WB will pull “Tenet” from July 17, which could lead to another domino effect of other films losing their release dates once again. But let’s be optimistic and assume that everything will be alright by then and films will begin to be released by mid-summer.
