Sometimes, we see many of the actors connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe having trouble finding their footing in other projects post-MCU breakout, and landing more serious roles can need some convincing. Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch, is expressing her own experience trying to secure other roles while taking work meetings and how that Marvel link can lead to some confusion and having to prove that she isn’t consuming superhero material in her spare time.
Olsen recently appeared on the NPR podcast, “Wild Card With Rachel Martin,” where the actress talked about having to let potential suitors know off-the-bat that her work with Marvel Studios, which she is admittedly “proud” of, doesn’t align with her “personal taste” when it comes to film and books.
“I think I haven’t always successfully made choices in my work that are aligned with my personal taste, and that is something I feel like I’m still trying to prove when I meet people,” Olsen said of her Marvel role as Scarlet Witch can inform the perception of her across the industry. “Especially if it’s a work type meeting and be able to express my personal taste in films and literature, and so I still think I have that to prove.”
Olsen continued, “Because I have spent so many years doing Marvel that I feel like all the other jobs I have to do have to really reflect my personal taste because as much as I love being a part of this world — and I’m proud of what I’ve been able to do with the character — it’s not really the art that I consume. Which I have been very honest about.”
This isn’t a shocking revelation by Oslen in the scheme of things. Marvel projects are sometimes just simply work or the next gig for actors, and many aren’t going to be die-hard fans of the source material. Also, it sounds like Olsen is trying to be honest to possibly stomp-out endless comic book project offers and making it clear that grounded work is also a professional desire.
Not too long ago, she was vocal about not being part of the “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” due to the filming of her new series “Seven Sisters,” but it remains to be seen if Elizabeth Olsen ends up filming something for Marvel down the line.
