Can any film this year be more music-centric than “TÁR’”? Todd Field’s acclaimed project follows a legendary (but fictional) composer and conductor’s fall from grace. Its star, Cate Blanchett, perfectly immerses herself in this deeply flawed character in a film that touches upon cancel culture, consequences, and how the world reacts to those they have built up but then want to tear down. The Playlist’s Jack King described the actress’ contribution as “a hydrogen bomb of a performance from Cate Blanchett, inarguably at her best since 2015’s “Carol.” Now, “TÁR” is delving into its musical elements for a one-of-a-kind video.
The “TÁR” soundtrack is getting a unique treatment — featuring the talents behind this celebrated film. Todd Field adds more cinematic symmetry as he directs the video for “Mortar;” this haunting piece from the original score sets itself apart thanks to the striking short. The filmmaker reunites with his “TÁR” cast, including Blanchett, to create an unforgettable viewing experience.
Music is an essential part of the film, providing a compelling partner to the increasingly disturbing points which appear throughout the narrative. Credit for the soundtrack goes to Academy Award-winner Hildur Guðnadóttir (“The Joker”); her work comes together to create a concept album as complicated as Lydia Tár herself. The results have gone beyond its cinematic roots, debuting at number one on the Billboard Traditional Classical Albums Chart. “I was very excited to get involved and to dig into the invisible elements, the psychological elements, and the way music creeps under your skin,” Guðnadóttir said of the project.
The video for “Mortar” is set to receive a special two-day release. It premiered on Deutsche Grammophon’s YouTube channel on November 10. Get your first look at the video below.
