I talked about this in my write-up for “Peter Pan & Wendy,” the upcoming live-action remake from Disney, but David Lowery is the King of the “one for them, one for me” creative model. Almost like clockwork, the filmmaker will follow up an indie film with a big-budget film before coming back to another indie drama. A couple of years ago, we saw him release “The Green Knight,” which is being followed up by “Peter Pan & Wendy.” And as we could have predicted, after he’s done playing with Disney, he’s going back to his indie playground with a new film from A24 titled “Mother Mary.”
According to A24, David Lowery will write and direct a musical film, titled “Mother Mary.” The film is also set to star none other than Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel. The film is described as “an epic pop melodrama following a fictional musician (Hathaway) and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer (Coel).” In addition, we also learned that Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX, two of the biggest pop musicians and writers working today, are contributing original songs for the film.
As mentioned, Lowery is known for films such as the aforementioned “Green Knight” and the upcoming “Peter Pan & Wendy.” However, before those films, he also directed “The Old Man & the Gun,” “Pete’s Dragon,” “A Ghost Story,” and “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.”
Recently, Anne Hathaway has had roles in films such as “Armageddon Time” and the forthcoming “She Came to Me” and “Eileen.” She also had a prominent role in the Apple TV+ series, “WeCrashed.” Coel recently showed up in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” but she’s probably best known for her TV work in series such as “I May Destroy You,” “Chewing Gum,” and “Black Earth Rising.”
It’s unclear when production on “Mother Mary” will begin, but this is definitely a film we’re excited to see.
