'Mr. Robot' Creator Says The Upcoming Final Season Will Be "One Very Long Christmas Special"

Judging by the series’ previous seasons, it shouldn’t be too surprising that “Mr. Robot” isn’t going to end its run in the traditional way. Throughout the first three seasons of the cable series, creator Sam Esmail and his cast have continued to subvert viewers’ expectations by throwing in twists and turns that you probably wouldn’t have seen coming. And with its final run, the upcoming Season 4, “Mr. Robot” is again going to buck trends, and finish in a very…British way.

“Is anybody here a fan of British television?” Esmail asked at a Tribeca event (via Deadline). “Typically how [British shows] wrap up series, like the British ‘Office,’ you tend to do a Christmas special. So the final season of ‘Mr. Robot’ is one very long Christmas special that will last about a week over Christmas of 2015.”

The creator of the popular, Emmy-winning USA Network series explained that the final season of “Mr. Robot” will continue the trend of mirroring the current events of today.

“The tagline for the first season was, ‘Our democracy has been hacked.’ A year later it happens,” said Esmail. “In the writer’s room , we’re continuing to let current events inspire us, and that’s what feels relevant. [When we first started], hacking felt relevant, and the day after [USA Network] picked up the series, the Sony hack happened.”

He continued, “Part of the reason people connected to the show is we wanted to talk about now. The show is still set in 2015 for this reason. The technology will always look dated, but we specifically said, this is about 2015, so it’s almost like a period piece for current day.”

Of course, Esmail and the cast that were in attendance were short on details for Season 4, wanting to preserve as much of the surprise as humanly possible. The series, which debuted a number of years ago sort of cut its teeth with a massive twist in the first season, and since then, has tried to keep viewers on their toes.

But that being said, star Rami Malek thinks that the end of the series will be satisfying for those fans, who have come to expect quite a bit from “Mr. Robot.”

“I think it’s going to come to a phenomenal end,” he said. “But I obviously can’t say how.”
