Another week, another international film gets the English-language remake treatment. This is a trend, to be fair, that has been going on for decades in Hollywood, but in 2021, as international cinema becomes easier for folks to find on streaming services, the idea of an English-language remake of a really good, recent foreign-language film seems, well, unnecessary. Alas, Hollywood is going to Hollywood, and Amazon is going to remake “Goodnight, Mommy.”

According to Variety, Amazon is set to create an English-language remake of the acclaimed horror film, “Goodnight, Mommy.” The film is set to be directed by Matt Sobel (“Take Me to the River“), based on a script by Kyle Warren. And perhaps the silver lining to this news is the fact that Naomi Watts is set to star in the film.
“Goodnight, Mommy” tells the story of two brothers that are sent to live with their mother, who has recently come back from a medical procedure that left her face completely wrapped in bandages. After the kids begin to notice unusual behavior from their mom, they start to consider the idea that maybe the person claiming to be their mother is actually an imposter. The original version of “Goodnight, Mommy” was released in 2014 from directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz.
“My favorite films are those that invite the audience to step inside their protagonist’s journey,” said Sobel. “In our reimagining of ‘Goodnight Mommy,’ fear of abandonment — and the dreadful realization that those close to us may not be who they seem — create an immersive nightmare, with visceral sensations front and center. I can’t wait to create this heart-stopping story with Amazon and the peerless Naomi Watts.”
It’s unclear when production might begin on the new “Goodnight, Mommy,” but with Watts attached, this will be a remake that we’ll keep an eye on, for sure.
