Like it or not (and we’re going to guess she most certainly loves it), Brie Larson has found herself at the center of every discussion about feminism in Hollywood. That’s not to say that Larson is somehow trying to take all the feminist spotlight from other folks, but through her recent “Captain Marvel” promotional tour and the surprising amount of hate she received for comments she’s made previously, the Oscar-winning actress is now the poster child for what many trolls would call “SJW Hollywood.” (My eyes can’t roll back in my head far enough.)
And even though the release of “Captain Marvel” has come and gone, and Larson’s film has proven wrong all the trolls who were predicting it would be Marvel Studios’ first flop, these idiots are still out there trying to tarnish any sort of accomplishments that the actress has made. The most recent example of this is with Larson’s upcoming directorial debut, “The Unicorn Store.” The film, which premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival (remember that, it’ll be important in a second), is set to debut on Netflix in a matter of days and is part of an overall deal the actress signed with the streaming company. The deal also includes one more film that she is expected to direct.
To help promote “The Unicorn Store,” Netflix tweeted the trailer, with some nice words about the film. You know, as the streaming giant is supposed to do. Well, the trolls came out in force to naysay Larson and her directorial debut (sight unseen, mind you). In a now-deleted tweet (via IndieWire), a Twitter user replied that Larson was “just riding ‘Captain Marvel’s’ wave,” and the success of that film is what landed her the directing gigs. Now, as you should remember, ‘Unicorn Store’ debuted in 2017, a year and a half before “Captain Marvel” dominated the box office, and well before Marvel Studios even started promoting the film.
So, since Netflix is not the type of company that shies away from interacting with unreasonable people on Twitter, the streaming company replied to his tweet with a laundry list of accomplishments that Larson has accumulated over the years, including “58 acting credits, 53 award noms, 2 writing credits, 2 short film directing credits, 1 composing credit, 1 producing credit, 1 Oscar, 1 feature directing credit.”
Larson caught wind of Netflix’s response and simply replied, “NETFLEX.”
Another filmmaker was made aware of the Twitter exchange. Edgar Wright decided to reply directly to Brie Larson, and say (tongue firmly pressed into his cheek), “Brie, you only won 1 Oscar out of a total of 58 attempts. Do better.”
So, it would appear that the social media hate of Brie Larson is still alive and well. And for those who want to celebrate the young actress and her first feature film as a director, “The Unicorn Store” hits Netflix on April 5.
So excited to share the trailer for Unicorn Store, @brielarson's directorial debut and an absolutely charming, heartfelt, exploration of the things that drive us and the creativity that adulthood often tries to extinguish. pic.twitter.com/1nLqX8DJ3r
