'New Order' Trailer: Michel Franco's Near-Future Dystopian Thriller Arrives In Theaters This May

The best part about film festivals is when a feature comes out of nowhere and utterly wows you. That’s what happened with many critics when they screened “New Order” last year.

As seen in the trailer for “New Order,” the thriller follows the story of a wealthy couple on their wedding day. Things are going just as planned until unknown people invade the ceremony as part of nationwide protests by workers that are being unfairly treated by the rich and powerful. The film stars Diego Boneta, Naian González Norvind, Samantha Yazareth Anaya, Dario Yazbek Bernal, and Patricia Bernal. “New Order” is written and directed by Michel Franco. His previous films include “After Lucia,” “Chronic,” and “April’s Daughter.”

We saw “New Order” as part of last year’s Venice Film Festival. In our review, we said, “A brilliantly unflinching look at a society built on extreme disparities that reads more like an omen than a far-fetched fantasy, ‘New Order’ repeatedly subverts any hope redemption. It guts you with the worst of human nature, like Franco often does, but within a larger sociopolitical scale, and for that, it’s utterly unshakable.”

“New Order” arrives in theaters, via NEON, on May 21. You can watch the trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

Conceived six years ago, Michel Franco’s near-future dystopia feels ripped from headlines that haven’t yet been written. While protests rage in the streets, Marianne’s high society family prepares for her wedding. At first, only splatters of green paint and the appearance of Rolando, a former employee seeking emergency medical funds, intrude on the festivities. But soon the party is unable to keep the reckoning at bay, and what follows is a swift disintegration of law and order defined first by class lines, then by disastrous government recapitulation.
