With the Toronto International Film Festival unveiling their big first wave of programming yesterday, and Venice Film Festival set to do the same tomorrow, the New York Film Festival is making sure they aren’t forgotten. Today organizers have announced the addition of a Centerpiece picture to their lineup, which just also happens to be one of the most anticipated movies of the year (at least for us).
“Beginners” director Mike Mills will be bringing his new effort, “20th Century Women,” to the New York Film Festival for its World Premiere. Starring Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig, Elle Fanning, Billy Crudup and Alia Shawkat, the film is a comedic portrait set in Santa Barbara in 1979, and follows a single mother raising her teenage son in a sprawling bohemian house, shared by an itinerant carpenter and a punk artist with a Bowie haircut, and frequented by her son’s rebellious friend.
Yep, we’re sold, tell us where to line up. No release date yet for this one from A24, but an awards season bow is likely.
The New York Film Festival runs from September 30th to October 16th.
