'Newness' Trailer: Nicholas Hoult Discovers Hookup Apps

The anguish of having to choose between dating Felicity Jones and dating Jennifer Lawrence was the subject of Drake Doremus‘ starry romantic downer “Like Crazy,” which won the Grand Jury Prize for Drama at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011. For his upcoming film “Newness,” he’s going with a more likely premise. It’s about a relationship between a pharmacist (Nicholas Hoult) and a physical therapist (Laia Costa) that begins after they meet via a hookup app called Winx.

While its plot sounds timely, “Newness” doesn’t seem promising. Doremus’ last movie, the sci-fi love story “Equals,” received lackluster reviews (The Playlist’s Jessica Kiang called it “a film that might just make you hate love”) and the critical response to “Newness” since it was screened at Sundance this year has been unimpressive. (Though our Noel Murray found much to like). Even with a cast that includes the lovably creepy Danny Huston and “Mad Max: Fury Road” actress Courtney Eaton, the movie might have trouble finding an audience. Here’s the official synopsis:

In contemporary Los Angeles, two millennials navigating a social media–driven hookup culture begin a relationship that pushes both emotional and physical boundaries.

“Newness” hits iTunes on November 3rd. [People]
