Nicolas Cage Will Recreate Scenes From 'Face/Off' & 'Con Air' In His Meta Film 'Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent'

At The Playlist, we pride ourselves on being a film website that doesn’t just talk about the latest superhero blockbusters or franchises. We like to shine a light on indie projects, international films, and festival favorites. Basically, we know that the film industry can seem overrun by Marvel films, reboots, and sequels, but that’s not all the medium has to offer. Sometimes, just sometimes, a special film comes along like Nicolas Cage’s upcoming project, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.” A film that just demands our complete attention.

If you haven’t been following along, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” isn’t just a great title for a film, but it’s the project that you’ve probably heard described as being “The Nic Cage meta-project where Nic Cage plays a version of Nic Cage trying to land a Quentin Tarantino film.” And judging by a new interview that Cage gave to Empire, it appears that we can amend that description to include “The Nic Cage meta-project where Nic Cage plays a version of Nic Cage trying to land a Quentin Tarantino film, with flashbacks to his time shooting ‘Face/Off’ and ‘Con Air.’”

Just when you thought writer-director Tom Gormican’s film couldn’t get anymore face-meltingly awesome, Cage reveals that we might actually get to see the actor recreate some of his most iconic, batshit crazy roles.

“It’s a stylized version of me, and the fact I even have to refer to myself in the third person makes me extremely uncomfortable,” the actor explained. “There are many scenes in the movie where modern or contemporary – here we go – ‘Nic Cage’ and then young ‘Nic Cage’ are colliding and arguing and battling it out. It’s an acrobatic approach to acting.”

He added, “I don’t like to look back. But this movie kind of pushes it all back in my face. I’m probably going to have to look at a couple of the movies from the past again because I think we’re gonna have to reenact some of those sequences. It’s like walking through a ‘Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari’ version of ‘Con Air’ and ‘Face/Off.’”

‘Massive Talent’ sounds like it could be the most ridiculous film to ever grace a screen, and yet, you can’t help but get excited about it. If this project turns out to be half as wild as it’s being described, then we could be looking forward to a full-on Nic Cage-aissance, where the actor finally earns the respect he deserves and is put on a cultural pedestal as one of our great talents.

Or, you know, it could be utter trash. But either way, sign me up! “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” is scheduled to hit theaters on March 19, 2021.
