When Jennifer Kent delivered the breakout 2014 horror film “The Babadook,” she gave us a bone-chilling exercise in fear. And not only did she take audiences aback with her family horror, but Kent also announced herself as an exciting new voice in the horror genre and one that all eyes are still on.

Thankfully, she didn’t have to wait too long to make her follow-up feature. However, her latest film, “The Nightingale,” sidesteps conventional horror and she’s keeping audiences on their toes. While the movie appears to not be a demonstration of the dark sides of the human mind the way “The Babadook” was, this new period revenge film still looks to meditate on the dark side of human nature.

“The Nightingale” is a period drama set in the 1800s. Newcomer Aisling Franciosi plays a convict seeking revenge against a British officer, played by Sam Claflin, for crimes he committed against her family. Aiding her is an Aboriginal tracker (Baykali Ganambarr) who has his own troubled past.

Judging by the synopsis and the trailer, we know this won’t be pleasant. Also, anyone who’s traumatized by “The Babadook” may not necessarily be ready for this one. However, it’ll be interesting to see where the film’s title comes from. What kind of song will “The Nightingale” sing?

The casting of Sam Claflin is interesting. He doesn’t have much experience playing villainous roles. So, it’ll be intriguing to see what he does with a role against type. As for Aisling Franciosi, “Game Of Thrones” is what she’s likely known for at this point. However, if the film delivers and she knocks it out of the park, it could be a major breakthrough. Perhaps in the same manner as “The Babadook” actress Essie Davis who, interestingly enough, also appeared on “Game Of Thrones.”
“The Nightingale” made its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. It opens in theaters August 2 via IFC Films. Watch the official trailer below and let us know what you think.
