Here’s some juicy casting news: Variety reports that Russell Crowe, Rami Malek, and Michael Shannon will star in “Nuremberg,” an upcoming historical drama. James Vanderbilt helms and writes the film, adapting Jack El-Hai‘s “The Nazi And The Psychiatrist” for the big screen. “Nuremberg” is a co-production between Bluestone Entertainment and Walden Media, with Széchenyi Fund also financing the film.

Malek stars in “Nuremberg” as an American psychiatrist in post-war Luxembourg tasked with interviewing captured Nazis to see if they’re fit to stand trial for their war crimes. But Malek gets more than be bargained for when he must face off against Crowe’s elite Nazi officer and Hitler confidant Hermann Goering. Shannon will play Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, the chief prosecutor in the Nuremberg trials.
“Nuremberg” is a big sophomore directing gig for Vanderbilt, a name more associated with his screenwriting than being behind the camera. Vanderbilt’s first big hit in Hollywood was scribing “Zodiac” for David Fincher. Since then, he has writing credits on the two “The Amazing Spider-Man” movies with Andrew Garfield, Adam Sandler‘s “Murder Mystery” films, and the most recent “Scream” sequels for the Radio Silence crew. Vanderbilt has also been busy on the production side of things, too, co-producing “Ambulance” for Michael Bay last year and Radio Silence’s 2019 horror survival flick “Ready Or Not.” “Nuremberg” is Vanderbilt’s first directing job after 2015’s “Truth,” an adaptation of Mary Mapes‘ “Truth And Duty.”
“What an absolute honor it is to be working with such a tremendously talented group of actors,” Vanderbilt said in a press statement. “Our partners at Bluestone and Walden have been incredibly supportive, and I cannot wait to bring this amazing true story to the screen.”
Vanderbilt starts shooting “Nuremberg” in Hungary next February, and he’s aligned a solid crew for the film. Dariusz Wolski and Eve Stewart, both Oscar nominees, will be director of photography and production designer, respectively. Meanwhile, Emmy winner John Papsidera is the film’s casting director. Richard Saperstein, William Sherak, Vanderbilt, Brad Fischer, Istvan Major, and Paul Neinstein produce the film with Filmsquad. Executive producers on “Nuremberg” include Walden’s Frank Smith, Ben Tappan, and Cher Hawrysh. Annie Saperstein, Brooke Saperstein, Beau Turpin, Béla Hajnal, and Nikolett Barabas also serve as executive producers.
With Crowe, Malek, and Shannon starring, expect “Nuremberg” to have some buzz as it gets closer to release. Maybe an awards season release for the film next year?
