Got a Tip?

Official Synopsis Revealed For Spanish Comedy Starring Will Ferrell, Diego Luna & Gael Garcia Bernal

Just a few months ago, it was revealed that Will Ferrell would be starring in a Spanish-language film with Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, called “Case De Mi Padre.” Details were scarce but the Matt Piedmont — who helmed all 12 episodes of HBO’s “Funny or Die Presents…” — directed pic now has a synopsis and is reworking the title.

Though the film looked to be a far-fetched joke at first, its currently in the can and being test screened. The synopsis (via Collider) that has been released reads, “This movie is currently called UNTITLED SPANISH COMEDY and stars Will Ferrell, Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries), Diego Luna (The Terminal) and Genesis Rodriguez (TV’s “Entourage” & “Dona Barbara”). Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father’s ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch encounters financial difficulties, Armando’s younger brother Raul (Diego Luna), shows up with his new fiance, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez). It seems that Raul’s success as an international businessman means the ranch’s troubles are over as he pledges to settle all debts his father has incurred. But when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul’s business dealings turn out to be less than legit, all hell breaks loose as they find themselves in a war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal).”

The tone of the film is said to be like Spanish telenovelas with over-dramatic acting and ridiculous scenarios as evidenced quite thoroughly above. Ferrell will be speaking Spanish with English subtitles, just like the rest of the Spanish-speaking members of the cast that includes Pedro Armendariz Jr., Hector Jimenez (“Nacho Libre“) and Adrian Martinez (“It’s Kind of A Funny Story“). We presume the pic will hit later this year, but if you need more Ferrell in your life his indie dramedy “Everything Must Go” will land in theaters this spring via Roadside Attractions.

Luna’s feature directorial debutAbel” just found a distributor after playing the festival circuit last year, and he’s getting ready to film “Contraband” with Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster and Kate Beckinsale soon. Meanwhile, Bernal has a couple of flicks on the way including awful looking romantic comedy “A Little Bit of Heaven” and the thriller “The Loneliest Planet.” –Catherine Scott
