How does a legendary musician navigate touring in a world changed by COVID-19? “Coastal” follows Neil Young as he hits the road once again. The documentary, described as utilizing a cinéma verité style, showcases the artist’s 15-date all-outdoor, all-acoustic solo “Coastal” tour. This anticipated project features concert footage as well as behind-the-scenes moments. One of the most intriguing aspects is the performer delivering observations on the bus and with his audience.
Young finds a familiar talent to helm the project, Daryl Hannah (though he doesn’t have to look that far; she’s his wife). The acclaimed actress is known for starring in Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner,” Ron Howard’s “Splash,” Oliver Stone’s “Wall Street,” and Herbert Ross’ “Steel Magnolias.” Hannah previously directed “Mountaintop.” The 2019 documentary provides an unvarnished look at Neil Young with Crazy Horse’s recording process. She is also noted for her work with various charities and causes. Hannah recently expressed her support for Ukraine during this year’s Academy Awards.

The illuminating film also features songs rarely, if ever, played live, performed in breathtakingly beautiful theaters.
