Whatever happened to actor-turned-filmmaker Olivia Wilde directing a “Spider-Man” spin-off, rumored to be a Jessica Drew “Spider-Woman” film? Well, it’s unclear if it will ever happen, and it’s clearly not anywhere on the release date schedule. But perhaps in a sign that she still intends to make some kind of superhero film centered around women, she’s signed a deal to partner with producer Simon Kinberg and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap productions to make a live-action adaptation of Rob Liefeld’s “Avengelyne” comic series (via THR).
Liefeld is, of course, the creator of Marvel’s “Deadpool,” but “Avengelyne,” co-created by Cathy Christian, is not related. It first came out in 1995 via Maximum Press. The character is a fallen angel cast out to earth who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters.

Wilde, who last directed the thriller, “Don’t Worry Darling,” is attached in the package deal set, but Robbie is not attached to star. Her LuckyChap productions were instrumental in getting the billion-dollar-grossing “Barbie” to the screen, sticking with it over the years as many different stars and actresses were attached. But having starred as Harley Quinn in the DC Universe, clearly, Robbie also knows superheroes.
Kinberg is best known as the producer of most of the modern “X-Men” movies and both “Deadpool” movies when they were set up at 20th Century Fox.
Liefeld and actress/MMA Gina Carano tried to make a big-screen adaptation of “Avengelyne” in 2013, but it never came to pass.
Whether “Avengelyne” is in place of “Spider-Woman” for Wilde is unknown, but it’s been four years since it was announced, and it feels like the project has stalled out. Sony has no ‘Spider-Man’ movies on the calendar right now, but they do have an unrevealed title set for June 27, 2025, which could be their fourth “Spider-Man” film, co-produced with Marvel.
Liefeld projects have been rather buzzy in Hollywood, but THR notes, as an aside, that “Extraction” filmmaker Sam Hargrave and Jake Gyllenhaal are no longer involved with the adaptation of the comic book artist’s “Prophet” movie.
