The first real nominations of the 2025-2026 awards season are here. The Gotham Film & Media Institute revealed the 2025 Gotham Awards nominees this morning, and as expected, “One Battle After Another” led all films with a record six nominations, including Best Feature, Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson), Best Adapted Screenplay (Anderson), Best Supporting Performance (Benecio Del Toro, Teyana Taylor), and Breakthrough Performer (Chase Infiniti). Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just An Accident” and Mary Bronstein’s “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” both earned three nominations each, including Best Feature.
This year, The Gothams expanded the Best Feature category to 10 nominees. The other seven honorees include Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” Kate Beecroft’s “East of Wall,” Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet,” Sarah Friedland’s “Familiar Touch,” Alex Russell’s “Lurker,” Eva Victor’s “Sorry, Baby,” Mona Fastvold’s “The Testament of Ann Lee,” and Clint Bentley’s “Train Dreams.”
Despite costing a reported $140-170 million, the Gothams removed the budgetary constraint for all submissions last year. It will not be eligible for the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which will reveal their nominees on December 3. Neither will “Hamnet,” nor several other nominees for that matter.
It should be noted that Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme” and Bradley Cooper’s “Is This Thing On?” were not able to submit due to the early screening deadline.
In the Best International Feature category, nominees include “It Was Just An Accident,” Park Chan-Wook’s “No Other Choice,” Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague,” Bi Gan’s “Resurrection,” and Mascha Schilinski’s “Sound of Falling.” Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value” and Oliver Laxe’s “Sirat” were snubbed. The latter was nominated in the Best Director category, however, alongside Anderson, Panahi, Bronstein, and “The Mastermind’s” Kelly Reichardt.
The 10 nominees for Outstanding Lead Performance included Jessie Buckley (“Hamnet”), Lee Byung-hun (“No Other Choice”), Rose Byrne (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”), Sopé Dìrísù (“My Father’s Shadow”), Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Die My Love”), Wagner Mourna (“The Secret Agent”), Josh O’Connor (“The Mastermind”), Amanda Seyfried (“The Testament of Ann Lee”), and Tessa Thompson (“Hedda”). Outstanding Supporting Performance nominees included the aforementioned Del Toro and Taylor as well as Jacob Elordi (“Frankenstein”), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (“Sentimental Value”), Indya Moore (“Father, Mother, Brother, Sister”), Wunmi Mosak (“Sinners”), Adam Sandler (“Jay Kelly”), Andrew Scott (“Blue Moon”), Alexander Skarsgård (“Pillion”), and Stellan Skarsgård (“Sentimental Value”). And, yes, that’s a very rare case of father and son nominated in the same category. Will it continue over the rest of the season?
Breakthrough Performer nominees feature Infinit, A$AP Rocky (“Highest 2 Lowest”), Sebiye Behtiyar (“Preparation for the Next Life”), Abou Sangaré (“Souleymane’s Story”), and Tonatiuh (“Kiss of the Spider Woman”).
The Best Documentary voting committee recognized “2000 Meters to Andriivka,” “BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions,” “My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow,” “The Perfect Neighbor,” and “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk.”
The Gothams previously announced a number of its annual tributes that will be handed out during the ceremony. Noah Baumbach will receive the Gotham Awards Director Tribute for “Jay Kelly”; Tessa Thompson will be bestowed with the Gotham Spotlight Tribute for her performance in Nia Da Costa’s “Hedda”; the cast of Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” will receive the Ensemble Tribute; and Guillermo del Toro, Oscar Isaac, and Jacob Elordi have landed the Vanguard Tribute for “Frankenstein.” And, yes, that’s two Netflix films earning tributes so far.
Films completely overlooked by the voting committees across all categories include “Smashing Machine,” “Rebuilding,” “Rental Family,” “Sunfish (& Other Stories On Green Lake),” “Twinless,” “Peter Hujar’s Day,” “A House of Dynamite,” “Weapons,” “The History of Sound,” “Christy,” “Dead Man’s Wire,” and “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” among others.
The 2025 Gotham Awards will be handed out on Monday, December 1st, during a ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street.
