A couple of days ago, we got the first social media reactions to “Barbie,” which were complimentary and made it seem as if the hype is very real regarding Greta Gerwig’s comedy film. However, on the same day that “Barbie” hits theaters, we have Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” perhaps the most anticipated film of the entire summer. So, what are the early reactions to that film? Well, folks, it appears the Barbenheimer event we have all been excited for is going to include two really solid films, as early critical word is that Nolan’s new drama also lives up to the hype.
In the months leading up to the release of “Oppenheimer,” the marketing machine has been painting Christopher Nolan’s film as the most epic of his filmmaking career. That says a lot considering the filmmaker’s previous works. But when you read the social media reactions to “Oppenheimer,” perhaps those statements weren’t wrong.
Various critics are using such words as “staggering,” “powerful,” “audacious,” “spectacular,” and “incredible.” These are the exact words Universal was hoping people would say when the studio forked over a reported $200 million to finance the film. In the past, we’ve seen Nolan’s less beloved films still earn a ton of money, but if “Oppenheimer” is as great as these critics are saying, the film could be a runaway success in the biggest way for everyone involved.
While our own Gregory Ellwood doesn’t necessarily comment on the epic scope, it does appear that Nolan was able to bring some emotion to the film (which isn’t his strong suit) with a “moving conclusion.” Not only that, Ellwood teased the possibility of Emily Blunt earning an Oscar nomination, and he also said that Ludwig Göransson’s score is a “masterpiece.” High praise.
“Oppenheimer” opens in theaters on July 21. You can read the a selection of the early reactions below:
