So here we are. The moment that basically every film fan (even if some are openly hostile to the idea) sees as their Superbowl; the announcement of the Academy Award nominations, for the 85th time, in this case. Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone took to the stage at 5.30 PST to deliver the news, after months of the usual feverish speculation. So how did things turn out?
Well, leading the pack is Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" with a whopping twelve nominations, including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Adapted Screenplay. Only just behind is "Life Of Pi," which exceeded expectations with eleven nominations. And in third place was "Silver Linings Playbook," which overperformed with surprise nominations including Director, Editing and Supporting Actress for Jacki Weaver.
Also doing nicely were "Argo" (7 nominations) and "Les Miserables" (with 8), while "Django Unchained" and "Amour," both of which had been questioned as Best Picture nominees, managed 5, including the big one, along with "Zero Dark Thirty." "Skyfall" also took 5, but slipped at Best Picture and in the acting categories that some had tipped it for. "Anna Karenina' managed 4, all below-the-line, while "Beasts of the Southern Wild" took 4 nominations, including Best Picture and, shockingly, Best Director, with Benh Zeitlin and Michael Haneke beating out Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow for a nomination.
