If you watch the trailer for “Over the Moon” and don’t know anything about the film, it’s likely you’d think you’re seeing the latest Disney animated film. The animation is beautiful, it’s a musical, and one of the lead character’s parents dies. All the tell-tale signs of a Disney film. But “Over the Moon” isn’t a Disney film, instead arriving on Netflix, but it still looks pretty great.
“Over the Moon” tells the story of a young girl that is told a legend about the Moon Goddess, a woman that lives on the Moon waiting for her true love. To prove the existence of the Moon Goddess, the young girl builds a rocket ship and attempts to launch herself into outer space. But as the trailer proves, that story is just the beginning.
The animated film stars the vocal talents of Cathy Ang, Phillipa Soo, Robert G. Chiu, Ken Jeong, John Cho, Ruthie Ann Miles, Margaret Cho, Kimiko Glenn, Artt Butler, and Sandra Oh. “Over the Moon” is directed by Glen Keane. The filmmaker is probably best known for his recent Oscar win for the animated short “Dear Basketball.” He is also a longtime animation veteran working as an animator for Disney on a number of projects including “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and more.
Netflix is expected to release “Over the Moon” this fall.
