After what might go down as one of the most embarrassing marketing blunders in recent memory, with a trailer that was universally ridiculed by moviegoers, Paramount was able to recalibrate and strike box office gold when “Sonic the Hedgehog” was released in theaters earlier this year. And now, hot off the great theatrical run and solid home video release, it appears the studio is ready to get the blue CGI creation back on the big screen ASAP.
According to Variety, the studio is reteaming director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller to work on a “Sonic the Hedgehog” sequel film. Obviously, it’s far too early to figure out what the sequel plot might look like, but it’s fair to say that the film will feature more of the wise-cracking, superfast hedgehog (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he battles his nemesis Dr. Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey).
As mentioned, the film had a surprisingly strong run at the box office, but perhaps an even more surprising streak of good reviews from critics. Unlike many video game adaptations, ‘Sonic’ became a film that many critics recommended, especially for families and children, as the silly film turned out to be one of the better family-friendly offerings of the year. Granted, given COVID-19, there hasn’t been much competition for any movie that was able to be released before March.

It’s far too early to know when the film might begin production or even when it might arrive in theaters, especially given the global pandemic that is continuing to devastate the film industry. But Paramount is likely trying to get this film going pretty quickly, as we normally see studios attempt to keep these franchises fresh with a new film every couple of years.
