How long does it take to find your soulmate? Two people face the question time and time again in “Past Lives.” The film focuses on childhood friends split up by things beyond their control. Years later, they connect once again only to find more time must pass before seeing each other.
First-time filmmaker Celine Song directs from her own script — prior to the project, she wrote for Amazon’s action-adventure adaptation “The Wheel of Time.” According to Song, it took an outstanding script to convince A24 as well as the cast and crew this project was worth their time. “I’m a first-time filmmaker and I’ve come from theatre, so I don’t have shorts. It’s the script that convinced A24, my crew, and my cast that I can do this,” she told Screen Daily.
The film stars Greta Lee and Teo Yoo as the star-crossed pair. Lee has appeared on numerous series — including “The Morning Show” and “Russian Doll,” her co-star Teo Yoo appeared in 2022’s critically-acclaimed “Decision to Leave.”
The film’s official synopsis:
“Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrest apart after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea. Two decades later, they are reunited in New York for one fateful week as they confront notions of destiny, love, and the choices that make a life, in this heartrending modern romance.”
Romantic connections don’t always happen on time in A24’s “Past Lives.” The film debuted at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival before playing at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival. No specific release date has been announced, but A24 says “Past Lives” will arrive in theaters this summer. Watch the trailer below.
