“Penny Dreadful” is a series that sort of flew under the radar in recent years, as other high-profile series garnered the headlines. However, over its short three-season run, the Showtime series gained a cult status and loyal fanbase to rival any show on TV. Now, only two years removed from the series finale, Showtime is bringing back the supernatural series, but with a new name and location, titled “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.”
Deadline is reporting that “Penny Dreadful” creator, writer, and producer John Logan is bringing the franchise back with a brand-new take. The series, which originally was set in London and featured all sorts of public domain characters from goth fiction including Dorian Gray, Mina Harker, Van Helsing, Dracula, and Frankenstein’s Monster, is moving ahead to the 1930s and exploring a new location — Los Angeles.
However, the location and time-period are not the only changes ahead for the popular series. Logan says that ‘City of Angels’ will have a different mission statement than the previous fan-favorite run.
“’Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in the ‘Penny Dreadful’ London storylines,” Logan said. “We will now be grappling with specific historical and real world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of ‘Penny Dreadful,’ there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”
Gary Levine, President of Programming, Showtime Networks added, “We were so thrilled when John Logan came to us with this wildly original take on the ‘Penny Dreadful’ mythology that explores both the human spirit and the spirit world here in California. ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ promises to be an extraordinary saga of familial love set against the terrifying monsters that are around us and within us.”

‘City of Angels’ will take place in 1938 Los Angeles, which is deeply rooted in Mexican-American folklore and the aforementioned social tension. The focus of the series will be the conflict between characters related to Santa Muerte and another group allied with the Devil. So, never fear, even with the focus shifting to more historical and socially conscious themes, the supernatural battles that helped garner the fanbase aren’t going anywhere.
There’s no release date yet, but production is expected to begin sometime in 2019. So, it appears that 2020 is a safe bet for when “Penny Dreadful” fans will get to see this new, exciting vision.
