After a celebrated festival run last Fall, American audiences get a chance to see Gionfranco Rosi‘s “Pompei: Below The Clouds” next month, although the doc only hits two theaters in NYC.

Not to worry, though, as MUBI will stream “Beneath The Clouds” exclusively starting on March 27. Rosi’s doc is a portrait of the city of Naples, told in fragments of the daily lives of its various residents, from teachers to firemen to grave robbers, who all live under the quiet and constant threat of Mt. Vesuvius erupting again.

From award-winning filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi. A striking portrait of life in Naples, a city living in the shadow of Vesuvius. Beneath the quiet threat of eruption, people go about their days: archaeologists unearth the past, children learn as the earth hums, firefighters wait for the next call. The result is a portrait at once local and universal: a reflection on humanity’s capacity to live, love, and rebuild in the shadow of the unimaginable.
Rosi writes and directs “Below The Clouds,” and leads producers with Donatella Palermo and Paolo Del Brocco. The doc also features an original score from Daniel Blumberg, the composer who also scored Brady Corbet‘s “The Brutalist.”
“Below The Clouds” had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last September, in competition for the Golden Lion. Rosi’s film also screened at BFI London, NYFF, Stockholm International Film Festival, and Valladolid International Film Festival last year.
“Pompei: Below The Clouds” hits IFC Center and the Walter Reade Theater at Film At Lincoln Center on March 6 before streaming exclusively on MUBI on March 27. Watch a trailer for Rosi’s documentary below.
