Just before the release of “The Hateful Eight,” Quentin Tarantino listed off the projects he might tackle before he steps away from moviemaking altogether. The director, who has said he’ll only make two more features (though he’s keeping the door open to changing his mind), mentioned everything from a ‘30s gangster movie to a TV mini-series version of Elmore Leonard’s “Forty Lashes Less One” (which technically wouldn’t count toward his retirement). Frankly, it’s hard to keep up with all the projects he’s mentioned as possibilities over the years, but this certainly wasn’t one of them.

THR reports that Tarantino is putting together a movie about the infamous Manson murders. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence are being eyed roles, and both have some history in the Tarantino-verse, of sorts. Pitt, of course, starred in “Inglourious Basterds,” while Lawrence had been rumored very early on to play Daisy Domergue in “The Hateful Eight.” The plot of the Manson movie has yet to be revealed, but in case you’re wondering, it will certainly involve a story thread with Sharon Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski who was brutally murdered at the hands of the madman and his followers. Deadline adds that Margot Robbie might be in the mix to play Tate, with Samuel L. Jackson also eyed for a role.
It will certainly be interesting to see Tarantino play in this milieu because it’s directly in his wheelhouse — there is no director who more thoroughly loves all films and music from the ’60s. That being said, as his first movie based on true events, it’ll be interesting to see how his style adapts to the material that is very well known, and perhaps not best suited for Tarantino’s more sensational tendencies.
The film is still a long way off, but the studio is not expected to get an opportunity to pick it up until the fall, with production not slated to start until summer 2018. But we’re sure this won’t be the last we hear of the movie.
