Earlier this week, a report from the Atlantic was released that revealed four more men coming forward with allegations that filmmaker Bryan Singer had sex with them or sexually assaulted them while they were underage. Many assumed that this might be the final nail in the coffin for Singer, who has been hit with similar accusations in the past, and has had a well-documented series of erratic behavior on set that led to his dismissal from “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Well, not so much.
As reported months ago, Singer signed on to direct the upcoming “Red Sonja” film for Millennium Films, which could end up earning the director a $10 million payday. We wondered if producer Avi Lerner and Millennium Films would have second thoughts about Singer being attached to the film. Apparently not.
“I continue to be in development for Red Sonja and Bryan Singer continues to be attached,” says a statement from producer Avi Lerner (via THR).
Lerner added, “The over $800 million Bohemian Rhapsody has grossed, making it the highest grossing drama in film history, is testament to his remarkable vision and acumen. I know the difference between agenda driven fake news and reality, and I am very comfortable with this decision. In America people are innocent until proven otherwise.”
It would appear that Lerner is just as defiant as Singer and refuses to believe the numerous men that have come out with accusations against the filmmaker. Using terms like “agenda driven fake news” brings to mind the current political divide in the US that pits Donald Trump against the media, which he dubs “fake news.”
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what pundits and insiders feel about the move. One thing is for sure, Singer’s troubled times on the set of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and his history of awful reported sexual misconduct claims didn’t stop the film from earning $800 million worldwide. However, with this story garnering headlines once again, it’ll be interesting to see what happens in the future.
The two big questions surrounding “Red Sonja” now are: will big name actors sign on for the big-budget project knowing what allegations are out there? And will movie audiences stay home instead of supporting Singer, who continues to have a tarnished legacy?
