Reese Witherspoon Says ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Is Inspiring How She Handles ‘Legally Blonde 3’

For years now, Reese Witherspoon has been trying to throw her star power behind “Legally Blonde 3,” in an attempt to bring that sequel to life. After two well-received, financially successful “Legally Blonde” films, it seemed as if a third feature would happen in fairly short order. However, that hasn’t been the case. Now, years later, Witherspoon is still actively trying to make it a reality, but she’s looking at Tom Cruise’s recent ‘Top Gun’ success as inspiration for taking her time and making sure it’s just right.

Speaking to USA Today, Reese Witherspoon, who is something of a superstar producer right now, talked about the process of bringing “Legally Blonde 3” to life. And according to the star, she doesn’t want to mess up the opportunity to have a ‘Maverick’-esque moment.

“I’m still hoping that ‘Legally Blonde 3’ is gonna come together in the right way,” Witherspoon explained. “It’s just like ‘Top Gun’: They waited a long time to make another version of that movie, and I loved the nostalgia piece they incorporated in it. So, definitely that gave us a lot of inspiration about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and make sure that we had all those same touchstones that mattered to people (back) then.”

She continued, “I feel like these characters are my friends, so I safeguard them. I would never make the subpar, mediocre version of their story.”

As of now, the most recent news about “Legally Blonde 3” came in mid-2020, when it was revealed that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were brought on to help write a script for the film. Of course, the pandemic was in full swing by then, and many projects have been delayed or shelved in that time. So, it’s unclear if Kaling and Goor turned in a new script yet or not. 

However, it’s obvious Witherspoon is still really into the idea of continuing the story of Elle Woods and her legal journey. So, don’t be surprised if we get “Legally Blonde 3” news sooner rather than later.
