John Boyega Isn't Interested In A Marvel Role: "That's Not In The Vision For Me Now"

It’s been interesting to see the stars of the “Star Wars” Sequel Trilogy, which began with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” react to their massive introductions in one of the biggest films of all time. Especially, when you consider the two leads, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, have gotten to the point where they are shying away from continuing the franchise route of their career. And for Boyega, that’s something he’s purposefully avoiding in recent years, especially when the topic of a potential Marvel Studios film is brought up.

Speaking to Men’s Health, “Star Wars” star John Boyega was asked about his future ambitions and if there’s a potential superhero film in the works. Boyega has long been rumored to appear in a Marvel Studios film, but most of that has been due to fan-casting and fan enthusiasm. And according to the actor, that’s about as far as it will get.

“That’s not in the vision for me now,” Boyega said. “I want to do nuanced things. I want to donate my services to original indie films that come with new, fresh ideas because I know it’s real hard to top Iron Man in that universe.”

This isn’t the first time Boyega has spoken about avoiding franchises. After his experience on the three “Star Wars” films, the actor was very outspoken about how he felt a bit put off by how he was treated by Lucasfilm and Disney, specifically when it was seen just how toxic fans were throwing racist and sexist comments towards him and other new actors in the franchise. At the time, no one else was really talking openly about this situation, but Boyega was out there saying that Lucasfilm needed to make sure to protect Black and brown actors. And he doesn’t regret speaking out one bit.

“I’m the one that brought this to the freaking forefront,” explained the actor. “At least the people going into it now, after my time, [they’re] cool. [Lucasfilm is] going to make sure you’re well supported and at least you [now] go through this franchise knowing that everybody is going to have [your] back. I’m glad I talked out everything at that time.”

So, for now, it would appear that Boyega is interested in doing his own thing and is no longer chasing more franchises. His next film is “Breaking,” which arrives in theaters on August 26.
