Does Ridley Scott love to develop more than he does making pictures? Granted, his output isn’t slow, generally cranking out a picture every two years or less (last was 2008’s “Body Of Lies,” upcoming is May 2010’s “Robin Hood,” and the period between 2005-’08 was extremely fruitful), but this guy has what, at least 10 projects on the go?
There’s the adaptation of Hasbro’s “Monopoly,” which we’ll bet you Park Avenue will probably be economically irrelevant by the time it hits screens. Don’t invest in that project.
There’s the fanboy number one choice of the “Alien” prequel, and runner-up, “Brave New World,” with his new muse Leonardo DiCaprio. Recently announced was a remake of the “Red Riding” trilogy and then the vampire film, “Passage” (gotta have one of those on the burner, the twihards insist!).
As Movieline astutely observed recently, “‘Ridley Scott is attached to direct.’ It’s among the most abused phrases in Hollywood,” noting his list of upcoming projects: the Soviet-era thriller “Child 44,” the religious supernatural film, “Stones” a Casey Affleck project called, “The Kind One” and sci-fi adaptation, “The Forever War.”
So why not add one more to the list? Ironically it’s the oldest one in the queue, going back to 2006, it’s “Gucci.” Yup, a film about the fashion design empire that’s likely to star Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie as Maurizio Gucci and his ex-wife Patrizia according to EW. Apparently it’s “next” up for Scott, but that’s also an over abused notion. Variety only has Jolie’s name and says the film is aiming for a 2010 start date.
Don’t worry nerdlinger’s — the same ones that are freaking out that Fincher isn’t doing a serial killer film next — there’s lots of drama, intrigue and murder here. If you recall, the fashion magnate’s wife Patricia was sentenced to 29 years in jail for plotting his 1995 murder (Gucci was gunned down by a hired hit man and she was convicted of arranging the crime). It’s a Fox 2000 project and who knew that subsidiary still existed. The current draft of the script was written by Charles Randolf (“The Interpreter”), but is still in development which means another rewrite. EW undermines their report by saying DiCaprio and Jolie are not attached yet. So they’re “circling” being “wet dreamed over?”
