Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons & More Join Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s New Movie Starring Tom Cruise

Four time Academy Award winner Alejandro González Iñárritu basically works with the crème de la crème of Hollywood. He scored Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant” (which won DiCaprio his first Oscar award for Best Actor), Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett for “Babel,” and incredible ensemble troupes for “21 Grams” and “Birdman” to name just a few. And his next film, which will star Tom Cruise is equally stacked.

Deadline reports a huge flurry of supporting cast members joining the untitled film, including the recently Oscar-nominated Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy Of A Fall”), Oscar-winner Riz Ahmed (“Sound Of Metal”), John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg (“Call Me By Your Name”), Jesse Plemons (“Civil War”), and Sophie Wilde (“Talk To Me”).

The plot has been mostly kept under wraps, but Deadline reveals it’s about “the most powerful man in the world, who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”

Iñárritu, Sabina Berman (an unmade Iñarritu film called “Light“), Alexander Dinelaris, (“Birdman”), and Nicolás Giacobone (“Birdman,” “Bardo”)are among the writers on the project. Cruise is also producing the movie and is very hands-on with the filmmakers.

This one definitely sounds like Cruise’s first foray back into the drama genre in forever, which is a much-welcome surprise, especially with Iñárritu at the helm. Cruise’s last pure drama movie was “Lions for Lambs” in 2007. Everything since has been action with some other genre on top of it since then (“American Made,” an action comedy, for example). There is no sign of a start date yet, but we’re eagerly hoping for a 2025 release..
