As they say in comics, no one really stays dead in comics. Even after saying “I am Iron Man” and succumbing to the overwhelming power of the Infinity Stones, it seems Robert Downey Jr. may not be entirely out of the MCU just yet. Instead, it appears the “Avengers: Endgame” star, as well as Jeff Goldblum and Taika Waititi will all return, albeit briefly, for Marvel Studio’s “What If…?” animated series for Disney+.

Though Kevin Feige himself had previously said that the animated Marvel series would feature all of our favorite actors and characters from the MCU, this still comes as a bit of a surprise to those who expected Tony Stark to remain dead following the events of Endgame. The news comes from Jeff Goldblum himself, who in an interview with Buzzfeed talked about his appearance on the Disney+ show.

“I went to the Disney studios and I recorded the Grandmaster’s voice for an episode of a show that’s gonna be on Disney+ that’s called What If…? It’s an animated version of all the characters we know and love from Marvel and this episode included the Grandmaster and Iron Man, so Robert Downey will do a voice for that, and Korg. Taika Waititi had already recorded his voice for that, so yeah, for a couple hours I enjoyed doing that.”

Since the episode involves not only the Grandmaster, but also Iron Man and Korg, it is safe to assume the episode will deal with an alternate scenario where Tony Stark is sent to the space arena from “Thor: Ragnarok” instead of Thor, which sounds like a lot of fun. Disney has already revealed a pretty big voice cast for the series as well as several of the scenarios we’ll see, like a zombie Captain America, T’Challa becoming Star-Lord, and Peggy Carter getting the powers of Steve Rogers.

“What If…?” is expected to launch on disney+ in 2021. You can watch the interview below.
