With “Red” set to open on October 15th, and impressing even the biggest doubters (ie. us) with its fun and energetic trailers, director Robert Schwentke seems to have a bit of heat around him lately. A couple of weeks ago it was revealed that he was looking at an adaptation of “The Osterman Weekend” (also made into a film by Sam Peckinpah) and now word has arrived of another project landing on Schwentke’s potential slate.
Deadline reports that Robert Schwentke is eyeing “Shadow Divers,” based on the book by Robert Kurson and once lined up years ago for Ridley Scott. The film would tell the story of “two wreck divers who uncover the hull of a German U-boat off the New Jersey coast in 1991. The divers became obsessed with discovering the truth behind the ship and the men who died inside it.” The film currently has a script by William Broyles (“Cast Away,” “Jarhead”) but will be tweaked to Schwentke’s liking.
This surely won’t be the last project to cross Schwentke’s desk as the director seems to enjoy jumping from genre to genre (“Flightplan,” “The Time Traveler’s Wife”), so it will be interesting see which direction he goes in next.
