It appears like Ron Howard’s forgotten fantasy epic “Willow” might be getting the reboot/sequel treatment.
Released on the heels of hits “Splash” and “Cocoon,” “Willow” was Howard’s attempt at fun high-fantasy, based on a story written by “Star Wars” creator George Lucas. Unfortunately, the film wasn’t a runaway success, at the time, but has developed a strong cult following over the years. Now, according to a recent interview with Comicbook.com, the director is talking with people about bringing back the film, but not in the way you might expect.

“I don’t want to give away too much, but there is a little talk of ‘Willow,’” Howard said. “We wouldn’t call it ‘Willow 2,’ I think it would focus a lot on Elora Danan, although Willow would have to be significantly involved.”
For those that aren’t familiar with the film, then you’re missing out on one of the great ‘80s fantasy films. The film starred Warwick Davis as Willow, as he protects a baby from the evil queen. Along the way, he is joined by Madmartigan (played by Val Kilmer, at the height of his powers). Howard mentions how the sequel would follow Elora Danan, who is the infant that Willow and Madmartigan protect. That makes a lot of sense, as the time for a true sequel, focusing on Davis and Kilmer’s characters, has clearly come and gone.
In the interview, Ron Howard also talks about how the fantasy influenced him while he was taking on the director duties for “Solo: A Star Wars Story:”
“I thought about that movie a lot as I was working on ‘Solo’ because there are certain scenes, especially around some of the Madmartigan stuff, was reminiscent of a character with that kind of swagger and bravado. And also some of the humor around some of the action in ‘Willow’ was something I inspired to get into ‘Solo.’”
Of course, “Willow 2” (or whatever it will be titled) is a long way off and may not even be made. However, for those fans of the cult classic, this is a much-needed glimmer of hope that we could be on another adventure with Meegosh, Willow, and Madmartigan.
