Got a Tip?

Rumor: Alfonso Cuarón To Direct ‘Harry Potter’ Spinoff ‘Fantastic Beasts’

Gravity, Cuaron

Of the handful of directors to tackle the ‘Harry Potter’ series, Alfonso Cuarón has largely been regarded as having directed the best entry, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.” But fresh in the glow of “Gravity“—a box office smash, critical favorite and multiple Oscar winner—where he could probably do pretty much anything he wants, will he return to the world of wizards?

Well, according to former Deadline founder/reporter Nikki Finke, that may just be the case. She’s going to be returning to the web with her new site in June, but perhaps as a taste of the kind of scoops she’s going to deliver, she has dropped the bomb that Cuarón is in “deep talks” to direct “Fantastic Beasts,” which Warner Bros. has just slated for a November 2016 release. Here’s here reveal:

Obviously, Finke’s track record speaks for itself, but we’ll still see how this pans out. It seems like a curious move for a director who can probably do whatever he wants at this point, and somehow turning back to mega-franchise feels like a step in the wrong direction. That said, maybe he really digs the material—which takes place seventy years before Harry even comes into the picture—and perhaps this is simply something he can do that will be less gruelling than the epic production for “Gravity.”

Thoughts? Let us know below, and either way, “Fantatsic Beasts” is coming on November 18, 2016 with Cuarón or not. [via Latino Review]
