It appears a new “hot project” is making its way around studios, with everyone eager to snatch it up. It’s “Calamity Hustle,” which isn’t based on an existing IP, nor is it some sort of big superhero thing. But when you hear who is attached, you’ll quickly understand why studios are reportedly offering huge cash to get their hands on it.
According to THR, Adam and Aaron Nee, the directing duo behind the hit action-rom-com “The Lost City,” are shopping around a new film they are writing and directing called “Calamity Hustle.” The real excitement is with the two leading men, as the film is expected to star Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum. ‘Hustle’ is said to follow the story of an ex-detective-turned-PI who has to find his estranged brother after the latter interferes with a diamond heist.
The report claims that nearly every studio is anxiously trying to get their hands on this film. Ludicrous numbers are being thrown out there to woo the filmmakers. Apparently, there is a studio willing to offer $50 for the two actors to split. Some say the overall package cost is roughly $175 million. So, in a year where we’ve seen major studios and streamers going to drastic lengths to cut costs, there’s still a major desire for this type of movie.
And what exactly is this type of movie? Clearly, “Calamity Hustle” is the epitome of a four-quadrant feature. This is something that will appeal to young people who think Tatum and Reynolds are hilarious, as well as your grandma who doesn’t watch many movies but thinks these actors are cute and charming. And if the film can be halfway decent, it has a shot to be a big hit, obviously.
Even when a deal is done, “Calamity Hustle” isn’t a sure thing. The report also claims that work still needs to be done with the script, so the whole thing could fall apart. But for now, this is a film that will be on everyone’s radar for the next couple of years.
