We figured something was gonna have to give. Easily one of the busiest actors currently working, Ryan Reynolds has a huge plate of projects on his upcoming schedule, including the comedy “The Change-Up,” the thriller “Safe House,” two comic adaptations in “Deadpool” and “R.I.P.D.,” and most likely “Green Lantern 2.” And all of this is supposed to happen within the next 18 months or so.
Thus, we’re not too surprised to hear that one of the comic adaptations might fall out of the pack. io9 (via /Film) spoke with the actor during press rounds for “Buried” and when pressed as to which film — “Deadpool” or “R.I.P.D.” — he would likely do next, he had this to say:
People sort of ask this question [which one will you make?], like I have any say in the matter. They’re both movies I’m interested in, they’re both movies that are in fast-track development. But I never say I’m doing a movie until I break for lunch the first day. Because it’s such a crapshoot, this industry. Everything’s so fickle and so contingent on so many factors, aside from just an actor. And because it has an actor, and because these films have interested directors, it’s obviously likely that they’ll both get made. But I think it would be more likely that only one of them gets made with me.
And really that makes sense, and is pretty much a realistic look into how Hollywood works. Projects are hot and then become cold or can’t be made for a variety of reasons. Both projects have picked up considerable steam over the summer. “R.I.P.D.” might arguably be further along now that is has Robert Schwentke attached to direct, but of course, should a miracle happen and Robert Rodriguez finds a way to make “Deadpool” within Reynolds’ timeframe (though it seems a longshot at this point), that could change the game considerably. Also, if “Red” tanks when it opens next month, suddenly “R.I.P.D.” could look like a gamble. A lot of factors are in play that will continue to change and shift over the coming months.
We’ll have to wait to see what happens, but which would you rather seem him do?
