Saoirse Ronan Says Her Barbie Cameo Would Have Been A Weird Barbie With Kate McKinnon

When the cast list was announced for Greta Gerwig’sBarbie,” one name was left out that seemed to shock people—Saoirse Ronan. No, not because Ronan’s career made her an obvious choice to star in the film. Instead, people were surprised because the actress had previously starred in both of Gerwig’s earlier films, “Lady Bird” and “Little Women.” But she didn’t have a role, at all, in “Barbie.”

Well, back in July, it was revealed the original plan was to have Ronan in the film, alongside her “Lady Bird” and “Little Women” co-star Timothée Chalamet. However, due to scheduling, or whatever reason, neither of the cameos worked out. Now, thanks to an interview with Variety, while promoting her new Sundance film, “The Outrun,” Saoirse Ronan opened up about the plans to include her in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster “Barbie” film.

While she’s not sure who Chalamet would have been in the movie, Ronan did have an idea about which Barbie she would have been. And it appears she would have shared a scene with Kate McKinnon, becoming another “Weird Barbie.”

“I don’t know what [Chalamet] was going to be, but I was definitely going to be Weird Barbie,” said Ronan. “I don’t know how to take that. I would have been with Kate McKinnon, so that would have been nice. I had a scene but didn’t ever get to do it, and it wasn’t in the movie.”

She added, “I can’t even remember [the proposed scene], but it was weird. I think I’d be the strange girl who talked to herself and always had her pet dog with her and always talked to the dog and wouldn’t look at anyone.”

As much as it would have been nice to see Ronan show up in “Barbie,” it’s not like there was a lack of starpower in the movie. One of the most exciting aspects of Gerwig’s film is just all of the massive stars she had in the cast, most of which were tasked with playing different versions of Ken and Barbie.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear like a sequel is happening anytime soon (if at all), and if it does, it doesn’t seem as if Gerwig is going to be directing (she’s busy with ‘Narnia’ for the foreseeable future), so perhaps Ronan has missed her shot at “Barbie.” I doubt Ronan is that bent out of shape, as she continues to be one of the most in-demand actresses working today.
