In fifteen days, Sasha Calle makes her big screen debut as Supergirl in Andy Muschietti‘s long-awaited “The Flash.” And EW reports that, if the actress has her way, her time as the superheroine won’t be a one-off. And maybe, just maybe, she’ll reprise the role in “Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow” in the new DCU.
“I hope to continue playing Supergirl,” Calle told EW in a new interview. “I love her deeply! And I think that [“The Flash”] is really a runway to a bigger story for her. We don’t really get to experience a lot. I feel like this is a runway to a bigger story. “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” by Tom King, is an incredible comic. I love it. I think it’s so cool. So yeah, I would hope to continue. I hope to continue playing Supergirl for sure.”
DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran already know King’s comic is great because they announced plans to adapt it in their January dispatch about the rebooted DCU. “Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow” is one of the five films Gunn and Safran announced at their joint press conference for “Chapter 1: Gods And Monsters,” the first phase of new DC movies and TV series.
In January, Gunn described “Woman Of Tomorrow” as a “big science-fiction epic film.” “Superman is a guy who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, whereas Supergirl, in this story, she is a character who was raised on a chunk of Krypton. She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.” Of course, Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy” arrives first on the “God And Monsters” docket. And expect some delays for that film and all the other announced DC projects due to the ongoing WGA writers’ strike.
But delays aren’t dampening Calle’s enthusiasm for the character or the upcoming film. “I advise people to pick up comic books,” the actress went on. “I advise people to go into a comic book store and have fun, and to sit there and just open everything up because it is the most fun experience. When I see a comic book store, I just immediately walk in and I’m like, ‘Where’s Supergirl?’ and I just read it all.”
So will Calle indeed reprise her role as Supergirl at a later date? Gunn and Safran still have a bunch of development to do for the new DCU, but how “The Flash” does in theaters may be a good indicator if the actress comes back for another round as the Woman Of Tomorrow. “The Flash” hits theaters on June 16.
