Chinese director Zhang Yimou‘s 2020s output has been nothing short of prolific: six movies in four years, including 2023’s masterful “Full River Red” (track it down where you can!). Now, after a year off, the 75-year-old is back with “Scare Out,” a spy thriller that stars “Resurrection” actor Jackson Yee.

Set in contemporary China, “Scare Out” follows a national security unit tasked with tracking down the leaker of classified intelligence. But after a number of setbacks, the investigation leads to the discovery that the mole is part of the task force, and the betrayals are far from over.

The film follows a National Security squad racing to identify and capture spies who have leaked classified intelligence about China’s latest fighter jet technology. The covert investigation expands beyond intelligence circles into civilian life as the hunt intensifies.
Along with Yee, “Scare Out” also stars Zhu Yilong, Song Jia, Lei Jiayin, Yang Mi, Zhang Yi, Liu Shishi, and Liu Yaowen.
Zhang Yimou directs a script by Cheng Yiang for “Scare Out.” Yimou’s regular cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding shoots the picture.
