'Scream' Is Reportedly The Latest Horror Franchise To Get A Big Screen Revival

Horror remakes and reboots are all the rage in Hollywood. Thanks to Blumhouse turning “Halloween” from a joke of a franchise into the biggest horror film of last year, studios are all trying to figure out what properties can be relaunched and capture that sort of box office glory. “Child’s Play” tried and failed earlier this year. “Candyman” is coming next year. And apparently, Spyglass Media Group is interested in seeing if “Scream” can make a comeback.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Spyglass Media Group is developing a brand-new film in the “Scream” franchise. It’s been over eight years since the last film, “Scream 4,” arrived in theaters, and in the meantime, the franchise has found its way on TV, in the “Scream” series, which wrapped up its third season earlier this year.

For those that missed the dominance of “Scream” in the late-‘90s, the film series was the product of filmmaker Wes Craven and served as a deconstruction of the slasher films of the ‘80s and ‘90s, filled with meta-references and humor, while also being pretty damn frightening. The first film, released in 1996, kickstarted a whole new generation of teen slashers, such as “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Urban Legend.” However, with Craven’s passing, the film series ended and “Scream” only recently came back on TV, with a story that tied into the film’s canon while also carving its own niche.

There’s no word on whether or not the “Scream” revival will be a sequel to the film series, a spin-off of the TV series, or something else entirely. The report does say that Kevin Williamson, who famously scripted all four films, is not currently attached to the new film.

The real question, as far as film fans are concerned, is why? “Scream” began its life as a meta-commentary on the horror genre and then itself became copied and satirized. What is a new “Scream” going to say about horror that isn’t already being done? Obviously, the answer to all of this is “MONEY!” But damn.
