‘Secret Invasion’: Marvel’s Nick Fury Series With Samuel L. Jackson Tackles A Classic Skrulls Story

Though it was already reported back in September, the recent Disney investors call revealed that Marvel Studios is, in fact, working on a Nick Fury-led TV series that will eventually land on Disney+. There’s one catch though, it’s not titled “Nick Fury” and it’s more than just about him. The show is, “Secret Invasion,” a newly announced series heading to Disney+ that stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos—characters who first met in “Captain Marvel.” The crossover comic event series showcases a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.

Well, this explains a lot now, doesn’t it? Nick Fury is the former head of SHIELD and the connective tissue that initially brought together the Avengers as one unified front. Since then, he’s been the man in the shadows, showing up from time to time to help the heroes when they’re in need. And now, he’s getting his own time in the spotlight.

The last we saw of Nick Fury was at the end of “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” In that film, it was revealed that the Nick Fury that was on Earth helping Spidey through his adventures was actually the Skrull friend he made during the events of “Captain Marvel.” The real Nick Fury is on a spaceship in an unknown part of the universe with the remaining Skrulls. This hints at a more cosmic story for the character, which is something we really haven’t see the super-spy tackle in his MCU appearances. And that is, of course, “Secret Invasion,” a story that’s ripped right from the comics (though sure to be different on screen).

“Nick Fury” joins the growing list of Marvel Studios TV series coming to Disney+ over the next couple of years. There’s the forthcoming “WandaVision,” “Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” “Hawkeye,” “Ms. Marvel,” “Moon Knight,” and “She-Hulk.” So, figuring out where we might see “Nick Fury” hop into the schedule could be difficult.
