After delivering studio genre tentpole films such as “Candyman,” “The Marvels,” and “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” director Nia DaCosta has been enlisted to direct the pilot and second episode of Prime Video‘s series adaptation of the popular comic book, “Sex Criminals.” DaCosta is also going to be executive producing the show as well, based on the Image Comics title from Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, which focuses on a couple who can stop time when they have sex and decide to rob banks using that power.
That announcement made by Amazon on Monday is another excellent update on the show that is being spearheaded by “The Big Sick” creative team, Kumail Nanjani (recently seen acting in Season 2 of Prime’s “Fallout“), and Emily V. Gordon, alongside series co-creator Tze Chun (“Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai”). The pair previously earned a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for their autobiographic dramedy script directed by Michael Showalter and produced by comedy world guru Judd Apatow.

An official logline for the show from Prime:
In “Sex Criminals,” Suze is a normal girl with an extraordinary ability: when she has sex, she stops time. One night, she meets Jon…who has the same gift. And so they do what any other sex having, time-stopping couple would do: they rob banks.
It had been recently announced that the main cast would feature Imogen Poots (“28 Weeks Later,” “Green Room”) as Suze and John Reynolds (“Stranger Things”) as Jon; we have to assume a supporting cast will be named at a later date. Interestingly enough, Poots recently had worked with DaCosta on her film “Hedda.”
The eight-episode run has a producing team that features Nanjani, Gordon, Chun, Dani Mealia of Winter Coat Films, Dani Gorin & Louie Hayes of LuckyChap, Fraction, and Zdarksy.
