Is the erotic thriller on the cusp of a renaissance? Given the several upcoming projects that fit the genre (including several from its most esteemed veterans and masters), that indeed may be the case. So why not add one more to the list, this one with Shailene Woodley headlining?
Deadline reports that the “Big Little Lies” alum will star in “Mother’s Helper,” the feature directorial debut from Bridget Moloney. Milo Callaghan and Luke Kirby are also on the cast sheet. Moloney also writes the picture, about a woman struggling to balance her household and marriage, who hires a handsome young man to help out at home. One only imagines he ends up doing much more than that…
MRC fully backs “Mother’s Helper,” continuing their penchant for funding the debuts of first-time directors, as they did on Chloe Domont‘s “Fair Play,” Jake Johnson‘s “Self Reliance,” and Cord Jefferson‘s “American Fiction.” Producers on the project include Aaron Ryder, Andre Swett (and Rachel Rubin co-producing) via Ryder Picture Company.
Woodley adds “Mother’s Helper” to a list of upcoming projects that includes the Hulu limited series “Count My Lies” and Netflix‘s “Unabomber” (another MRC joint). Other recent work for the actress includes “Killer Heat,” “Three Women,” “Dumb Money,” and “Ferrari.”
Meanwhile, Callaghan currently stars on USA‘s “The Rainmaker,” with other TV credits including “Rivals,” “Dune: Prophecy,” and “Video Nasty.” Kirby’s a “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” alum with other roles in “The Last Thing He Told Me,” “Dr. Death,” and “No Man Of God.”
Expect “Mother’s Helper” to get a release in 2027, but TBD if it’ll hit theaters or go straight to streaming.
